Abbotsbury at night
Abbotsbury is located 39 kilometres west of the Sydney CBD in the local government area of the City of Fairfield. Abbotsbury gets its name from Major Edward Abbott, a Canadian born soldier who arrived in New South Wales in 1790. Abbott was granted land in what is now Abbotsbury in 1806 although sold it to a William Browne in 1810. The estate remained intact until the late 1800s when it was subdivided into small farms and it remained a rural area until the late 1900s when residential subdivision began.

Abbotsbury seems to have had a larger proportion of Naval casualties (six out of thirteen) than many other Dorset villages, although this is perhaps not surprising when you factor in the closeness of the sea. John and Frederick Dunford were brothers, both Petty Officer Stokers; they died on adjacent days at the Battle of Jutland, serving on different ships. The non-Naval casualties all died at Gallipoli or on the Western Front. Edwin Louis Benbow has a separate memorial (a brass plaque) inside the church; he is described on Wikipedia as a flying ace, with eight credited victories while flying with 40 Squadron, Royal Flying Corps.
